Chapter Thirteen

Saturday, May 14th.

Comfort Inn. Memphis. Tennessee.

The early morning air in Memphis was warm and muggy but not unpleasant as they walked the dogs. Ted and Penny were full of energy as they ran around the parking lot sniffing for rabbits and playing with two other dogs.

Ted wasn’t as friendly to other dogs as Penny was and he often engaged in a round or two of snarling and snapping before he made a new friend.

When the run was over, Rob stashed them in the truck while he and Simone grabbed a quick breakfast. He wanted to get on the road as soon as possible and get back to Gideon. Now that he remembered, he had a lot to make up for.

Before leaving the Comfort Inn, Simone programmed Biloxi into the GPS and discovered it was three hundred and seventy-three miles away.

“Long way,” said Rob.

“I think we’ll stop in Jackson for lunch. That will be about halfway or better,” said Simone. After that, only a couple of hours and we’re there.”

“I hope I remember how to get to my trailer park,” said Rob.

“Your trailer park?” asked Simone.

“I bought it. I can remember getting a certified check at the bank and taking it to the lawyer’s office.”

“The bank that you don’t know the location of?”

Rob laughed. “Yep. That one. Gideon was with me. He takes care of stuff like that.”

“I can’t wait to meet Gideon.”

“You’ll love him. Same age as you, I think. About twenty-one or two.”

“I’m older than that, Rob.”

“Hell, you might like him better than me.”

“I doubt that.”

“We’ll change drivers at lunch,” said Rob. “If I own the fuckin park, we might have a place to stay tonight. We won’t have to bother with a hotel.”

“Makes sense. You’re saying a lot of crazy stuff today, Rob. I’ve got the feeling you’re going to remember where your family is very soon.”

“Hope so. I don’t know why in hell I ended up in Mississippi.”

“You don’t have a Mississippi accent,” said Simone. “I always wondered about that. You sound northern. Chicago. New York state. Some place up near the border.”

Rob laughed. “Wait until you hear Gideon talk. Can’t hardly tell what the fuck he’s saying most of the time.”

“Where’s he from?”

“We went there to take his baby from the druggie mother. It was near a job…I’m thinking… Atlanta.”

“He’s from Georgia.”

“Yep. Him and Sky.”

“How old is the baby?”

“Little. Bottles and diapers.”

“She’s a tiny baby,” said Simone.

Jackson. Mississippi.

Sitting on the patio at McDonald’s eating Big Macs, Rob rubbed his damp tattooed arm. “This humid weather feels so familiar to me. I must have lived here for a while.”

“I guess that’s how long you’ve been away from your family—the length of time you lived in Mississippi.”

Rob shook his head. “I don’t want to think of it that way, babe. That hurts my heart too fuckin much.”

“We’ll soon be back to your trailer park and Gideon will help us figure it out.”

“I can’t believe I’ll ever see my family again until I see them right in front of me.
